Window Care and Maintenance Tips

Customer education is a big part of what we do here at Window World of Westchester. Now that you have scheduled your window replacement, we have a few quick tips to get the most out of them. With the proper care and maintenance, your windows will last for years to come.

When it comes to double hung or single hung windows, which feature either one or two tilt-in sashes for easy cleaning, we offer a few tips for proper operation.

Moving the Sash

  1. The window should be unlocked.
  2. For the bottom sash: pull up on the lift rail
  3. For the top sash: pull down on the lift rail

Tilting In Sash

  1. Unlock the window
  2. Lift the bottom sash halfway up
  3. Slide the catch mechanisms toward the middle of the window
  4. Tilt the sash toward you
  5. Rest the sash on the sill
  6. Tilt the sash toward the frame until you hear it snap back into place on both sides, if you want to place the sash back in the frame.

With double hung windows, you can tilt the top sash in as well. You will have to:

  1. Lower the top sash halfway
  2. Slide the catch mechanism towards the middle of the window
  3. Tilt the sash toward you

Locking the Window

  1. Make sure lock is in unlocked position
  2. The top sash should be firmly pushed all the way to the top of the frame, if you have a double hung window
  3. Push down on the bottom sash so it’s at the bottom of the frame
  4. Turn the lock to the left

As said above, your windows will last longer and perform better if you take care of them regularly. Here are some tips:

  • We recommend a semi-annual cleaning
  • To clean the frame and sash, use water and a soft cloth.
  • If you need lubrication, apply a silicone spray
  • Clean screens with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum
  • Wash tracks with a stiff nylon brush, then wipe them down with a soft cloth.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

  1. Power washers or high-pressure sprays, which can damage caulking.
  2. Liquid grease remover, detergents and soaps that have organic solvents; nail polish, furniture polish, paint remover, or chlorine bleach-containing cleaners; and even mildly-abrasive cleaners such as Soft Scrub which can scratch the glass surface or frame.
  3. Sharp objects when cleaning.
  4. Oil-based spray lubricants such as WD-40; they tend to attract dirt.
  5. Painting or varnishing your vinyl windows.
